The J24 World Championship September 2020

The J24 Worlds is coming to Parkstone Yacht Club in September 2020.

The Worlds Committee, led by Bryan Drake, is aiming to make this an event of which we can all be really proud.  However, to pull it off we shall need a large gang of willing volunteers for all sorts of jobs. The preparatory work has started already as some of us have been out to observe events in Canada in 2017 and Italy last year. This year some of us will be going out to Miami, which is the last one before ours! This request for help may seem very early but we want people to be able to “save the day” well ahead of time.

We believe that we shall have between 50 and 60 boats, which will be sailed by top crews from many different countries. Each boat will be crewed by about 5 people and probably have two of three extra partners so at least about 350 visitors to the club from all over the world during the event! We have so far identified that we shall need 75 to 85 volunteers with a peak requirement on one day of about 45. The jobs range from ambassadorial roles such as welcoming competitors, interpreters and looking after international officials and sponsors; yard clearing and marking up/decoration; and Cruiser Shed setup through to registration and scrutineering (measurement); as well as facilitating socials; social media; then on-water jobs such as mark laying, patrol boats and others of the necessary race team together with spectator boats.

So a miscellany of jobs need filling. Those of us who have been involved before know what a fun and rewarding time can be had being part of an event especially this one, as it is a World Championship.

Dates:  September 2020

Monday-Tuesday 7th / 8th : Yard preparation

Wednesday-Friday 9th / 11th : Welcome, scrutineering and measurement

Friday-Saturday 11th/12th : Weighing, measuring and launching 

Sunday 13th : Launching and Practice race; Opening Ceremony

Monday – Thursday 14th / 17th : Racing; shoreside assistance needed for daily prizegiving etc

Friday 18th : Last afternoon of racing; Closing ceremony and Championship Party

Saturday 19th from 7:15 am : Haul Out and departure.

Please note that many roles are only needed for short lengths of time, so just because you can only help for a few specific days, please let us know and we will try to fit you in.
