Training On Offer

The following range of training is offered to members, the instructors are often members and staff who hold the appropriate RYA qualifications and/or relevant experience.

Powerboat and Race Management Training

RYA Level 2 Powerboat qualification is a minimum requirement for anyone driving a club RIB as a support boat for club racing.

PB Level 2 courses are of 16 hours duration and normally take place over a weekend during the winter and spring. PB Level 2 courses can sometimes be arranged at other times of the year if a group of sailors, for example from a particular dinghy fleet, want to take their qualification together.

The RYA Safety Boat qualification is for competent RIB drivers who hold PB Level 2  and who want to develop their skills in providing good safety cover when racing is taking place. None currently scheduled

 

Initial Sail Training - Dinghies 

For youth members, please contact the appropriate class captain to find out what training and courses they have planned for the season.

For adults, initial sail training is offered through the Ladies Sailing Group which meets on a Thursday evening during the summer, and by the Rusty Rudders group, which is for men and which meets on a Tuesday evening. Courses which lead to RYA level 1 and 2 could be arranged for groups of adults if there is sufficient interest. 

Race Training

Race training for youth fleets and adult classes is normally organised through the club’s racing fleets, with coaching offered either by club members or external trainers. To find out what is happening in your class, look at the relevant class webpage, or talk to the class captain. Many of our youth members become involved with the RYA’s Junior and Youth programmes.

Yacht and Seamanship Training

RYA Day Skipper theory courses are offered during the winter months. These courses are of several weeks duration, normally on a weekday evening. Please contact Poole Sailing for informaiton on courses run at Parkstone YC

RYA First Aid training courses normally take place during the winter and spring and are of one day duration. None currently scheduled

RYA Marine Radio (DSC) courses are taught and enable members to gain their VHF operators licence. This is a one day course which takes place normally during the winter. None currently scheduled

World Sailing/ RYA Offshore Safety Course This brilliant two-day course was developed following the report into the 1998 Sydney Hobart Race, where tragically 6 lives were lost. The aim is to provide the essential practical skills and theoretical knowledge to react effectively when facing heavy weather, emergencies and abandonment at sea. The course is a requirement for Skippers and crew undertaking Class 0, 1 and 2, offshore races under World Sailing (ISAF) rules and is recommended for all offshore Cruisers and Racers. 26th and 27th November 2022, please conatct Poole Sailing info@poolesailing.com for further information.

Mark layers’ course 

This is an in-house course which teaches participants how to lay marks accurately and recover them safely. This is particularly suitable for those who support the club’s programme of Open events. None currently scheduled
