About 1200 of the original Shrimper 19 and 100 of the new Shrimper 21 have been built. There are inboard diesel or outboard powered options with alternative cabin layouts having two to four berths.
There are over 100 S19s in Poole Harbour. At Parkstone YC about half of our fleet of 45 are raced and half cruised, and many raced and cruised, indicating the flexibility of the craft. They can be sailed single handed or, as many photographs show, with the family on board. Usually there is helm and crew for racing. There is the option of a marina berth or swinging mooring with water taxi.
Racing is friendly and competitive. The Shrimper is easy to sail but more difficult to extract optimum performance for racing The boat is ideal for those who want to either leave the restrictions of a large keelboat or dinghy wetsuits.
Cruising can be enjoyed in Poole Harbour or further afield – one boat has been sailed around the UK. Cruising in company is organised by the Club Shrimper Class and by the Shrimper Owners Association augmented by Parkstone YC Cruising Shallow Draft Section.
The class has generated a sociable ‘help each other’ style so that issues can be shared and help given as applicable. There are official functions such as the AGM, Prize Giving and dinners together with informal gatherings every Wednesday lunch time. There is racing on Monday evenings and Wednesday afternoons, sometimes on Saturday. Cruising is weather dependent but typically on Tuesday or Thursday and some weekends. Racing and cruising is well supported and usually open to other local club members.
