Q: What brought you to the Flying Fifteen fleet?
A: A passing comment sat at our old club where the view is nowhere near as nice … Ian’s crew had stepped back from sailing for a bit and he said he missed sailing his FF, I replied ‘if you join Parkstone I’ll sail with you’. He’d been talking about it for years so I thought I was safe and honestly didn’t think he’d do it!
Q: Tell me about your sailing history
A: My first experience of sailing was when I was around 8 or 9 and my dad hired a boat on holiday in the Med. On arriving home we joined Burghfield SC as a family and I was hooked. I did RYA youth squad training in Toppers and Laser Radials then Fireballs really took off at the club with a predominance of female crews and I gave it a go. I did a few Fireball nationals and the open circuit but mostly club racing and of course the annual pilgrimage to Poole week. Ian and I started sailing with each other in Fireballs and did our first Poole week together in the early 1990’s. Since then I’ve sailed a Merlin Rocket, RS 400’s and now the FF
Q: What has been your best sailing experience to date?
A: Planing 3 (or even 2) sailed reaches out on the trapeze with spray everywhere - what a great feeling!
Q: What has been your worst sailing experience to date?
A: Nosediving the RS400 at speed with the kite up in a race at Poole Week. Thrown forwards with my front foot still in the toe-straps I ‘bent’ my knee round the shroud and tore my MCL. That was the end of my regatta, and sailing for a while, but Ian was not deterred and sorted out a new spinnaker (that ripped when I pulled it down) and a replacement crew before taking me to the hospital!
Q: What is the best boat you have sailed?
A: It’s easier to say which was my least favourite - the Merlin, it was a beautiful boat but so much more unstable than anything else I’ve experienced. It was aptly called ‘First and Last’
Q: Upwind or downwind?
A: Definitely down.
Q: Light or strong winds?
A: Light to medium.
Q: Harbour or Bay?
A: Harbour (but that won’t surprise anyone)
Q: Your favourite music genre?
A: Anything I can sing along to.
Q: Your favourite drink?
A: Embarrassingly it’s probably a glass (or more) of Asti. A less embarrassing second choice would be Rosé but it has to be sweet, I dislike anything ‘dry’.
Q: What would your last meal be
A: Roast Lamb Shank, vegetables, mashed potato and gravy… followed by sticky toffee pudding and custard.
Q: Something about you that might surprise others
A: I love cars!
Q: What would be your walk-on song?
A: ‘Hold on I'm coming’ by Sam and Dave lol.
Q: What one record would you save from the waves?
A: Now That’s What I Call the 80’s - strictly speaking there’s four ‘records’ but it’s only one sleeve so I’m hoping that’s allowed.
Q: What’s trendy now that you think is ridiculous?
A: Crocs!
