Q: What brought you to the Flying Fifteen fleet?
A: A meeting in an office in Bristol with Peter Hogg where he had a picture of his F15 on the wall. He offered me a sail at the Bewl Open meeting a couple of weeks later with my crew Kevin Sweetman. Bad news there was no wind. Good news there was an Optimist full of ice and beer, and after some discussions with the fleet and Ian Pinnell a new boat was ordered on the Monday for Poole week back in 2005.
Q: Tell me about your sailing history
A: My dad was a founder of Tudor Sailing Club in Langstone harbour, so every weekend from the age of 7 was spent on a cruiser through the summers. I learnt to sail in a Yachting World Utility pram dinghy which was the tender. My first boat was boat was an old Mirror, which with a bit of help was rebuilt ahead of sailing at Burghfield SC. This was followed by an old fireball ahead of racing Lasers and Enterprises both in the UK and Norway. The Fireball bug had bitten and I returned to racing these for many years at Burghfield, including the annual pilgrimage to Poole Week. Before making the change to F15s twenty years ago I also sailed with my children in an Enterprise, RS200 and Kim and I had a Merlin Rocket and RS400.
Q: What has been your best sailing experience to date?
A: Three sail reaching on a windy day in a Fireball and I guess winning Poole Week in a near 20 year old Fireball much to the annoyance of the cheque book sailors.
Q: What has been your worst sailing experience to date?
A: Big boat sailing out of the sight of land - I get sea sick!
Q: What is the best boat you have sailed?
A: Best boat Fireball, best class Flying Fifteen.
Q: Upwind or downwind?
A: Upwind
Q: Light or strong winds?
A: Sailing with Kim, I have to say light wind.
Q: Harbour or Bay?
A: Harbour because every course is different and I'm still learning where to go.
Q: Your favourite drink?
A: Peroni
Q: What would your last meal be
A: Thai Green curry but there has to be a pudding as well
Q: What’s trendy now that you think is ridiculous?
A: Crocs
