Race report by Crispin Read Wilson
The first race of the Wednesday Autumn series saw six boats take to the water in a westerly breeze which shifted back and forth through 45 degrees and oscillated in strength from 7 - 12 knots.
As ever, PRO Alan Hescroff and ARO Fi Linford were up to the task, setting an excellent line and an Olympic course taking the fleet round 28, Rebbecks and Northshore Homes. Crispin Read Wilson and Steve Brown rounded 28 in the lead, hotly pursued by Homfray Vines and guest crew Denis Brophy.
On the second beat Dick Linford and Peter Biggs overtook Homfray and Denis and this order looked fairly settled until, on the last windward leg, Chris Jermyn and Ron Elliott took a leaf out of the Phil Owen playbook, crossing the main channel and leapfrogging the fleet to round 28 in first place. Unfortunately for them, Crispin and Steve managed to establish an inside overlap for the leeward mark rounding and covered them to the finish.
